It seems so weird though. The fediverse is small. Extremely small. They are taking on Twitter. A million users on mastodon doesn’t matter when Twitter has 250 million.
Same. Never gave refit Reddit a dime during my 12 years there. Signed up for the patreon on world couple of days back.
In an ideal world that would be great practice. But when Meta is sitting on 95% of the activity pubs usage, it’s just not going to be feasible to tell them “your problem”. Because that’s what users are going to be pushing for. Perhaps not you and me, and perhaps not many of those that have used services if the protocol for a while.
But the millions and millions who will be coming? They don’t care about Meta taking over. They’ll be mad when Mastodon stops syncing, or pixelfed. Who at that point have grown so much that there’ll be a huge public outcry if they don’t bend over backwards.
Can’t remember the exact figure, but they calculate on each user bringing in like $0.5 every three months or so. That’s how the Apollo creater came to the conclusion of them marking up their API prices by a 1000% or similar. So the cost of each user should not be much higher than that.
It basically comes down to being greedy and really wanting to get rid of 3rd party apps.
I find all to be rather good, and don’t miss r/all that much. There are much less news which I miss. And then there are the niche communities that don’t really exist. I’m very hopeful though!
