Reddit sucks. Let's make our own reddit with blackjack and hookers.
Result: there are now 15 competing reddit knockoffs. Each one is small and lonely.
Solution: let the reddit knockoffs talk to each other. This solves the problem of a fractured userbase. This was always reddit's strength: disparate communities united, on the same site. This size and diversity meant there was a high likelihood of someone who knows what they're talking about or someone with a unique perspective stumbling across the post and chiming in.
By understanding the motivation, hopefully the concept of "Federation" makes more sense.

The one in OP's picture is one such device. You plug it directly into the wall and it heats up. No fan though, just passive convection
Run by the same people. Donations to that link are used for both.
Some have raised concerns about wanting to fund one but not the other (e.g. earmark their donation to Lemmy but not Mastodon) but the admins said they weren't gonna do that yet.
This. Also, tanked water heaters only last 6-12 years. Ours is at 18 and has just started leaking. Please for the love of all that is holy: replace your water heater before you are forced to. Just received a replacement but the delivery guy damaged it and as a result I'm in RMA hell. They're telling me that the replacement for the replacement could take weeks.
Feels like the old days of reddit and imgur when sketchy news sites were commonly posted
I share those concerns, but also consider that there were often multiple duplicates of subreddits - just with slightly different names. Usually one of them would be the "main" sub with the most posts and engagement, and that's fine. I think the same will happen here in time.
Plex does alright at suggesting music from your own library, and also has some really nice DJ-like song transitions that are legitimately way better than any other track fades. However, Plex users have been frustrated with the company's slow response to fixing long-standing bugs, and some of the features are paid. It's also not open-source.
No idea if it can suggest music that isn't in your library; I know that they integrate with Tidal though, so maybe if you have that it'll also suggest stuff from Tidal?
