Kākāpō are large flightless parrots that used to be widespread across the country, before being hunted to near extinction.
I'll always take any chance to plug Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams which is a fantastic book that has a section about the Kakapo conservation efforts.
The "remake" Stephen Fry did a few years ago has this gem in it

(Professor Farnsworth Voice) Good News, Everyone! The planet is dying but here's a happy little article about a parrot!
Seems pretty dangerous. The main islands of New Zealand are full of pests/ introduced predators like rats, stoats, ferrets, possums, hedgehogs, and feral cats.
Hopefully they will put these flightless parrots inside a predator-proof fence, or their days are numbered.
Seeing the collective conservation efforts of multiple successive governments to eliminate all non-native predators from New Zealand by 2050 is really inspiring.
