they both adopted from different places, so i believe no, unless there's a cosmic interference trolling me xD
Only just caved into my boycott of Reddit today to see if r/malaysia migrated. Really happy to see that we have!
I think will be a while lah before we get more traction here, but one less comment we make on Reddit, is one less piece of content they get.
I think it's fine if we don't get back to what we have like in r/malaysia, my experience from there is we can only see like a hundred of user commenting and then the 290k user is all lurker and never interact. Our highest post upvote is only around 4500, so around 98.5% of them couldn't even bother to upvote a post, let alone comment or make an og post. The sub might be big but if you post/comment a lot or interact in the daily thread, the sub is actually pretty small and rather tight-knitted
Yeah, I understand that. Though I think the value of spaces like this is also to curate quality news and resources, which is what I used Reddit for a lot.
I think there's a lot of good for having a space where people are sharing relevant and interesting news. Even if they're lurkers, it doesn't mean they're not part of the community I guess?
I dunno where I'm leading this point lol. Just that I think everyone, even lurkers have a place as part of the community. Not everyone is social, but I think r/Malaysia & r/Malaysians made it feel like everyone is welcome regardless, and I'd like that feeling to carry on wherever the community goes.
I hope this place will grow to become the next r/malaysia. F Spez and his antics.
I'm still a bit confused by federating across platforms although I've been on Mastodon since last year and generally know how it works.
Anyway, hi. Glad that the nyets have migrated off that other place!
I just saw @test@test@monyet.cc with a cool username, and like hell, this is a blue ocean for stupid usernames but i went and used my boring username.
You can grab the only one of common names like James or Ali or Chan or Muthu. Or silly ones like AutoAdmin. Or really difficult ones like _underscore_
go wild!
but for real being able to create unlimited accounts because email is optional is dangerous. I know the site is still in early stage but mods should look into this.
I don't think there's an outright best method, just what the goals of the platform are.
FB and Linked-in are tied to the IRL you, and you tend to watch what you say (or at least, monitor who are your friends).
4Chan is totally unregulated and you can be your weirdest self, but there's a very different kind of human contact because all the interactions never long term.
Reddit doesn't need your email or ID, and you can be your online persona. Some people have multiple accounts for browsing different materials, or discussing problems that they want to keep private from reddit friends.
Myself, I'm totally cool with people having multiple accounts etc.
I was talking about identity theft actually. Should’ve made that clearer.
This is a new site but most of you migrated from Reddit which some of you already have established usernames for years. Many of those usernames are still available for grab. Not everyone is leaving Reddit.
I know mods probably don’t have much control over this so just trying to give PSA. Only matter of time until the trolls from land of boleh come causing troubles.
just be careful. Identify theft is not a joke.
NGL the thread structure is a bit hard to follow here with how close the lines going down are. Maybe it'll get easier over time.
honestly kinda like the empty look of this platform overall vs new Reddit/old Reddit's layout
yeah, it's a bit of a fusion of old and new reddit.
actually it kinda looks like the new new reddit, sh.reddit.com
!cafe@monyet.cc so this is tagging everyone in this community ?
Edit: it's like tagging a subreddit like r/aww
Lemmy doesn't support flairs rn, and their reasoning is it makes moderation harder and they can't figure out what kind of flair/tagging system to build. :(
Oh this is cool, this formatting can do superscripts and subscripts.
Behold:
2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
f(xi+1)=f(xi) + df/dx (xi) x (xi+1-xi) + 1/2 d^2^f/dx^2^ (xi) x (xi+1-xi)^2^ + ... = Σ[d^n^f/dx^n^ (xi) x (xi+1-xi)^n^/n!]
Gaaah stalked all the way from reddit to monyet.cc!
I hereby offer this backlit shot of a pile of Japanese rice as tribute. May it appease the members here.
Image 1: Image is a digital photograph depicting short grain rice in a bowl. In the background are ceramic ware which appear to be japanese tea cups. The rice is backlit, and the rice grains are visible as translucent grains. The rice is topped with pink coloured granules of indeterminate origin, which appear to be seasoning/garnish.
Oh wow, can upload pic inside/among the text! That's nifty.
I use this extension on my PC too! It's really handy, and if the colours are weird on sites with dark mode you can just turn it off.
Nooooooo sleepy, this would have been the perfect chance to get Unker to switch to light mode team.
@solus test test @Annoyed_Crabby
Edit: can not
Edit2: People can register the same name but under different instances, eg @solus@monyet.cc @Solus@lemmy.world
Hmmm this is kinda bad, someone can impersonate you by registering under different instances
Yeah, but you really have to get someone to be so motivated to do that, and their name will have the @instance_name as well, like this one. It sort of a problem on its own and all the socmed have this problem, like how phishing work.
Edit: odd, this comment didn't show up on my other acc
Yeah, but you really have to get someone to be so motivated to do that, and their name will have the @instance_name as well(i'd demonstrate but my other acc's comment didn't shows up, it's weird). It sort of a problem on its own and all the socmed have this problem, like how phishing work.
Yeah, have to have the whole link to refer someone, but even then it doesn't shoq up on notification. Very odd indeed
Thanks for asking guise! It's cheap, Lemmy is written to be very resource efficient! Domain is USD10/y, hosting is about USD20/month.
And hosting is actually overprovisioned and could probably be USD5-10/month. I got a slightly bigger VM just in case (2 CPUs, 2GB RAM). But I'm seeing CPU % at 2.5% with just one spike to 10% in the last day. RAM holding steady at 52%.
Zero issues covering costs for this experimental stage btw! We don't know how this will go yet. And things have been good career wise lately. But yeah if we start seeing real traffic and need to pay for big boy servers, we may need to figure out something with the community!
Testing username tagging. @solus@monyet.cc @some_random_meatbag@monyet.cc @unhedged@monyet.cc (garr why doesn't this work!?)

Am happy to chip in a bit for the yearly hosting fees. Can't sponsor cause RM purchasing power is too low arghhhh.
In the future can consider Liberapay to crowdfund from monyets here for big boi servers because the platform accepts MYR (no need to convert currency and deal with FTF) and you can contribute as low as RM 0.05 per week. It also does not take any service fees because its run by donations too.
Testing username tagging
It verks!
I'm also happy to chip in a little RM to fund the operations

Hi everyone, thank you mods for making this and hope this can be new home from reddit. Also !@#$ you spez.
Nah, long time lurker on reddit browsing catssssssssss. Especially daily thread oyen posts (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
I commented on the post in Reddit but I'll comment here as well. Is there any way I can help with running the Lemmy instance? I am not an experienced dev yet(I suck at ops and support) but I would love to contribute in any way I can :)
one good thing about this so far is that new comments are highlighted. thats good for me to know what has been newly commented.
And you can preview your text, which Sync for Reddit have both this function while official app doesn't. The app dev team is really lacking the urgency of making these qol change, but they like shoving useless feature to people
Doubt it. They're pushing a newer version of reddit (sh.reddit.com)(heh, shreddit) so they will continue to neglect qol change and make it even more addiction based.
So funny because my third party app does this, didn't know official app don't have this.
