Every year the GameMakers Toolkit hold the GMTK Jam and each year they share game engine usage data, and GMTK 2024 is the year of Godot
Even the stats from last year would've already impressed me, but this year is just completely insane. Just a tiny bit more and next year Godot might already be the preferred engine of choice for game jams.
We also submitted our very first game in this jam and used Godot.
We had no point where the engine got in the way, it just let us do what we wanted.
The only issue we did encounter is that the shader cache does not seem to work. Every time a level with the simplest shader in the world loads, we have to wait 5 seconds. Which is really annoying when debugging. From what I read it seems like Godot is supposed to be faster on second launch? Not sure what went wrong there.
We also could not export for web because we used C#, but it appears that feature is coming soon(TM).
I submitted my (first ever) entry this year, and I'm happy it was in Godot 4.2. Making it playable on Itch.io Web was a struggle.
Imagine the luck when they dropped 4.3 with single threaded web export a couple of hours before the jam👌
