Highly recommend checking out wefwef - closest option to an Apollo clone as I've seen so far in terms of UI and functionality, and doesn't even need to be installed. Memmy is a very good second place option, but I've been using wefwef since I heard about it yesterday and ZI think it's better.
Are you using it as an installed PWA? I’m not having any issues with animations or scrolling. I have run into a few weird UI bugs with slide up menus within communities, but that’s about it.
Going outbound or inbound? Outbound the requests are super basic, inbound they are pretty large. There’s a lot of limitations on that.
For example to get basic user info you have to receive a bunch of other information that you’re not going to bother using. Hopefully in time this will get changed, because there’s no reason to be receiving so much data whenever you really only need a few bytes.
the json coming back from requests like showing a thread was not compressed when I checked yesterday (firefox on ubuntu): https://discuss.tchncs.de/pictrs/image/1a99e758-deaa-46f6-8eff-3aa2158858ad.png
but I just checked again and now it's correctly responding with compression (chrome on windows)
Ohh you’re referring to wefwef. I’m not the wefwef dev, I’m the memmy dev. Thought you were talking about API calls memmy makes.
your app is truly amazing. bridges the gap from apollo perfectly - finally I can pitch my wife the idea of ditching reddit (she uses apollo and refuses to go to the reddit app as well) for lemmy
I do have installed as a PWA, and although I’m really liking it visually, it’s a bit buggy. I’d like to know if the bugginess is because of its beta status or the fact that it’s not native.
If it’s the latter, it’d be unfortunate since it’s making my switch to Lemmy so much smoother as I feel like I’m using Apollo, which I’m very used to.
It's probably a bit of both - wefwef has been around for literally just days at this point I believe, so I have high hopes it will continue to improve.
Beyond that, there are a lot of people who feel Apollo is/was the best user experience for Reddit, and there will be a LOT of devs trying to emulate that - one way or another, we're going to get a high-quality Apollo replacement eventually.
Thats's fair, most, if not all, of these apps has just started development, and it's pretty impressive what they've accomplished so far.
Right now I feel like when Mastodon started to grow exponentially last year, all of a sudden there were a ton of new pretty good clients. I can see something similar happening here.
I gotta say tho that although using wefwef is helping me getting used to not open Apollo, I think it would be really great if it grows to become its own thing once the platform matures.
I started with Mlem and wasn’t a huge fan and was primarily using Memmy. But I decided to try mlem again as it’s been a while and it looks much better! Might be my new daily driver. I’ll give wefwef a try too.
Yeah like a week after I joined they completely changed the display, and it’s been my heavy hitter. Wefwef feels like I never left Apollo though.
Lemmy.world is apparently rate limiting the wefwef.app domain. They are working on resolving it. In the meantime you can try the suggested solutions in their community https://lemmy.world/post/801298
For example self hosting it or using other's publicly available versions of it like https://w.opnxng.com/ though you should always be cautious using other's instances.
Agreed in most scenarios, but wefwef is arguably the best PWA I’ve ever used - it’s nice right now as an option to get something into user’s hands quickly without waiting for App Store approval. Would love to see it become a native app eventually.
Using it right now. So far it's nice. But I have like 7 plus the browser. See which becomes my default in time. I am just so used to RIF it's going take an adjustment.
There’s a rate limit issue happening with wefwef right now but there are alternatives website you can use like w.opnxng.com
Same app just a different host.
If you're on an iPhone, https://wefwef.app is pretty much the best and easiest way to get up and running. Way more options on Android right now, though.
Only thing missing that Apollo had is the haptic feedback. Otherwise it feels just the same
for a liiiiittle bit more effort (download testflight) check out memmy for lemmy. it's extremely close to apollo AND has the haptic feedback (and I might say I like the haptic feedback more?)
Only thing I missing that Apollo had is the haptic feedback. Otherwise it feels just the same
It's also really solid on Android. It's the first time, for me at least, that a web app has felt more solid than any legit apps.
I like wefwef, except the name is terrible and hard to type in a phone. So far, the only UI problem I have with it is it’s too easy to accidentally downvote when trying to upvote by swiping right.
Also, I just noticed, the upvote/downvote colours are reversed. It’s going to take time to get used to blue being upvote and red being downvote.
I also occasionally have a problem with it where the screen just stops scrolling, but if I give it a couple seconds it starts working again.
Editing to add: it’s been surprisingly good otherwise, though. I really like it.

Apollo is more like the wife who was murdered by Reddit, now watching you from heaven, hoping that you find a new social media platform to make you happy.
Great news, My favourite Reddit app Boost is officially making the migration to Lemmy.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rubenmayayo.lemmy
I'm so happy about that.
Congrats! I hope there will be an IOS app for lemmy soon because this website feels a bit clunky (but in a good way).
I have 6 downloaded so I can try them all. Lmao
Jerboa
Connect
Liftoff
Lemmur
Thunder
Wefwef
Edit: Connect was my favorite until i realized its absolutely riddled with trackers. RIP. Currently trying Wefwef but ill probably come back to Jerboa.
Which Reddit client are you coming from? Which Lemmy app are you enjoying the most right now? I'm an Android user coming from RIF. So far I have the most experience with Wefwef and Jerboa, and Wefwef is winning by leaps and bounds. I haven't tried too much of the rest, but I'm curious of your opinion on them if you've tried them all!
I'm from RIF. I'm on Jerboa and i still haven't tried the other ones because I've been doing other stuff. Lol
He addressed that a bit ago. That kind of undertaking would be pretty big, since the data structure on the back end is so much different. It’s not out of the question, but not something he wants to do right now.
Yeah, he definitely deserves some time off after this. But if he were to get around to it at some point he’d have a ton of users
oh, absolutely. I’m keeping the app installed in hopes that it makes a rebased comeback.
Wefwef is a web app that is a near carbon copy of Apollo. It’s how I’m browsing and it’s great. Much better than the web interface.
I’ve got that bookmarked and it is great, but I’ve been using Memmy for now. It does the slide for up/down votes (or whatever they’re called here) but a slightly different UI
I think he’s mentioned he doesn’t really have an interest in that right now. But I wish so too.
Any prior RIF users with some advice for which app to switch to for Lemmy that's the most similar?
Seconding Connect. Only been using it for the past 24hrs and the UI is equally as minimalist with some new idiosyncrasies to get used to.
Connect is GOAT. Only thing I need is custom font size then it would be perfect, at the moment it's either too big or too small.
Using Wefwef right now which was a huge upgrade from Jerboa. About to download Connect to see what all the hype is about.
Edit: ok all you fuckers are correct this is DOPE. Confirmed Connect user.
It's overall pretty good so far but I find that the swipe interactions with comments and posts can be a bit clunky. I frequently will swipe too far and accidentally save a comment when I just want to upvote. I'm still so used to Sync though.
Tried a few of these apps so far. Connect is really nice! It seems really snappy, and got it mostly working just like how I'd had RIF setup before.

Yup, but you have to get it through TestFlight right now. It’s going to be on the App Store soon though.
Here’s a link to the Memmy TestFlight page.
The only thing I'd change about Connect is the visability of comment interaction buttons but other than that with a few tweaks to font sizes and stuff it's a fairly similar experience to RIF.
As a former RIF user, I personally like Liftoff, which you can get in the Play Store, but other popular options are Jerboa, Thunder, Connect for Lemmy, wefwef, and Summit.
Connect and Liftoff are able to give a similar RIF UI. I was really liking Liftoff until I just now noticed why it was so "quiet" despite trying to chat a storm: it has no inbox and no notifications. Connect does, though. But it has less options for customizing the layout...
I want something that takes the best of both and smushes them together. 😩
Honestly ... I'm just using the website. With Firefox you can make any webpage into a homescreen app by chosing "Install" from Settings.
THERE ARE THEMES NOW?? Dang, development really is on fire.
I’ve been doing my best to read all of the notes for each update, but I totally missed that themes were a thing.
I’m blown away with the themes. Usually the polished themes come way later in an apps development but with memmy they’re already here.
I started using jerboa cause of a random suggestion, how does everyone feel about it? I noticed it doesnt collect user data and I think it said it encrypts stuff, which I like for privacy
jerboa crashes on me everytime. now i use connect for lemmy. I also like the interface more for it
I've only started using it, but I'm liking it alright. That being said, I'm going to use Sync as soon as it's available.
Jerboa used to work but it crashes for me now. I even tried uninstalling and making sure a version compatible with my server was installed (cleared app data and cache too), but nope, It's borked for me.
I use Connect for Lemmy now. Once Boost is out I'll most likely switch
After being here for 5 minutes. After not knowing how to login 6 minutes ago.
I've already forgot reddit exists.
I had to switch to connect for Lemmy, as jerboa was bugging out and not showing me anything on my feed from outside my local instance.
Waiting for sync for Lemmy but it's roughly 6 weeks away from release according to developer.
I have been getting "timeout" errors, which are a sign that none of my votes or comments for the couple minutes before the first error notice have actually landed. Happened a few times today and past couple days, although I can't tell if this is from an app bug or an overloaded instance server.
I couldn't login two weeks and had to do it on thed web page. I can't download images in comment sections :(
I'm using liftoff and I like it more, because it remembers that I only want posts from the communities that I'm subscribed to.
I'm using it. I like it better than connect which is the only other one on the play store right now. There are more but you have to install them off github. I'll just wait till they make it to play store to try those out.
Jerboa was one of the first legit apps out there for Android. But then it killed itself and became a horribly buggy, crashing mess. It doesn't seem to crash as much anymore, but scrolling is very laggy and glitchy still for me. Wouldn't recommend it at the moment, sadly, but I appreciate it as a pioneer.
Yeah, it's not too bad here. Got a dope username and gonna go on a spree searching up some cool new communities. There will always be enough people relaying all the reddit content, so why bother ig
I was so happy when I found my normal username was available here on Lemmy. It's a shallow reason to like the app, but it's part of what really sold it to me and made me check it out further, and so far, I'm really happy I did.
I deleted my original Reddit username a long time ago and always regretted it. DriftingDeep is back, baby!
I always wanted something better than my reddit username so I went with something unique! Hopefully the marijuanaenthusiasts page gets more users soon.
I think usernames are specific to the instance, so any time in the future a person can start up their own instance and get user@myinstance, but your username at lemmy.world is yours.
I think that's a wondrously extensible way of extending the username space.
I just changed the connect for lemmy icon to the Rif icon because it just felt weird without it.
I will keep sync on my phone because everytime I accidentally open it, I will remember why I dislike reddit and vow never to go back.
