More than 300 Pakistani nationals have been killed in the sinking of a overcrowded fishing trawler off the coast of Greece, the latest tragedy to expose the refugee crisis confronting the European Union as tens of thousands seek sanctuary from war, persecution and poverty.

TBF the boat disaster could have been a rescue story as well if someone cared enough. There are two major countries naval fleets in the Atlantic, whereas the story is much different in the Mediterranean.

I think it's also because the news heavily cares about how different and interesting a story is. The sub story:

Is just weird and different. Boats sinking happens all the time, but disappearing subs is rare and unusual. It's like how car crashes will barely get any attention but plain crashes will.
The fact that the sub is still out there makes for a continuing story to report. There's also the mystery element of "what went wrong?" I see a parallel to MH370, that plane that mysteriously vanished over the ocean a few years ago.
It gets to prey more heavily on people's fear. Being on a sinking boat is scary, but there's something even scarier about being in a stuck sub that can't even be easily reached and has no possibility of escape from.

Europe has been dealing with illegal migrants just like this for decades. It's not a new story. The arguments have been made a million times already. Governments argue they need to stop these illegal crossing because they're dangerous, and they're shouted down by activists who believe there are no borders or something. There are billions of poor people in the world. They can't all fit in Europe. I'm sorry, but not every poor person deserves the right to life-long social security in a European country. We would collapse.

Is enabling people trafficking by having a fleet of boats hanging out on the libian coast really going to save more people than ending the practice all together?

It's absolutely true that countless other things should be done to help the poor around the world, but I genuinely don't see how encouraging masses of people to set out to sea in sinking boats helps anything at all?

Why is Europe so rich?

Democracy, free speech, rule of law, the Enlightenment, less corruption, a proletarian work ethic, secularism, and more. The fact that you people think the only reason the West is doing well is because of acts from hundreds of years ago demonstrates such a superficial understanding of history it boggles the mind. As someone who grew up in Africa, allow me to explain how nations are run: corruption. In Nigeria, for example, where I have some experience, it's not even called "corruption." It's just how they do business and politics. "Gift giving" is just good manners. With such a set of values in place, you should not have any doubts about the reason for the lack of African prosperity.

I should remind you that all African nations have practised various forms of colonisation and slavery throughout history. Depending on the definition of the word, very few nations on Earth have not. Your Noble Savages trope is as tiresome as it is factually incorrect. At some point these nations will have to take responsibility for their current circumstances. Blaming other nations won't solve their problems, and we're going to close the doors soon.

Greek here, they were illegal immigrants. They were helpless people in a boat with a broken engine. They were people fleeing from a war. They were people that didn't ask for help fearing pushbacks, concetration camps, and police abuse. They were people the coast guard stood and watched them die for 3 days.
