In a way, it did have an important impact. Roy Wooten, AKA Futureman, turned one into a drum machine, the drumitar (which has since gone on to inspire its own product line). He played with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, among other groups, and produced very influential music among the right crowd. They didn't even have a guitarist, but Victor Wooten and Bela Fleck influenced many guitarists I'm sure.
