I see it this way also. Trump is stupid but DeSantis is trying to emulate stupidity to cater to the Trump crowd and he is doing a really bad job at it overall.

A politician who is OK with his supporters physically attacking peaceful opposition is a fascist. We are seeing similar stuff in some countries in Europe. We are again getting used to stuff we hadn't been seen in a long time.
