Effective May 25th, 2024, his seat is now vacant, and in accordance with the Bylaws will be filled for the remainder of its term by an appointment made by the Board. Updates to the GNOME Foundation Board of Directors Roster

Very little is known as to why this happened, even by people deep within the GNOME project, so try to avoid wild speculation.

This is surprising and the lack of details are concerning.

Edit:

Some updates on situation.

  1. GNOME Foundation President clarification.
  2. Sonny's reply.

After Multiple reads, I think there are 2 separate things going on. CoC complaint is not the reason for Sonny's removal. CoC is still ongoing.

That's what I understood.

There's this blogpost but it doesn't really shed any more light on the thing either

https://blog.sonny.re/retrospective-as-gnome-director

It does clarify that neither he nor anyone else involved wants people to speculate. Since he's the one being publicly shamed, and whatever other parties there are presumably felt that they were victim to something, seems like a good idea to respect that.

Activity on Sonny's GNOME-related projects will tell me enough.

That's going to be hard given he's had his GitLab account suspended.

His main projects are on GitHub.

Elaborate?

Sonny has been removed from the board of directors but his GitLab account also has been suspended. The second thing is more concerning for me, because the board is a position of greater responsibility and the GitLab instance is just a place to put one's code and to work on projects.

But one need neither be among the board or use GNOME's GitLab server to write their own apps for GNOME,so Sonny can continue to develop his apps. Will he do so or not that will reveal his attitude toward the GNOME project.

Thank you. It's concerning to me as I've known Sonny to be a really nice guy, not sure what possibly could have led to this.

Probably something involving a criminal record

This sort of speculation is leading nowhere.
