Amazing to see Jon back. I watched The Daily Show with Jon Stewart obsessively for years, and never thought to see this again. He's still got it. Just a few more white hairs.
Given that I also aged in the interim, I prefer his current look. He's a silver fox.
I haven't laughed that hard in a while. I'm grateful that he's back to give us a way to laugh through the bullshit and motivate us to keep fighting.

His Apple TV show was great too, except for Apple being scared to let anybody criticize China.
I liked the Apple TV show, too. The podcast was one of my absolute go-to's every week, even if I was not that interested in the topic. He said something in one of them similar to the idea he had at the end of Monday's TDS where he said that if you want to do change, it takes hard work on the local level. If you want to get out of the mind-fuck that is national politics in the US (and I'd argue in most places), you need to actually pay attention to what is happening in your own neighborhood and try to fix that.
Which is a fair point, but also at the local level is where it's more challenging, because not only are you getting involved with things that more directly affect you, but also you can make yourself a target to those that want to push change in the other direction, so of course not everyone is up to that task and that's why the overly aggressive conservatives constantly eat our lunches on the local level, and why they tend to scare off folks trying to change things at the local level.
This is happening all across the country, it's why many of the more moderate Republicans have resigned or left their party, their districts, and it's a barrier for Left leaning folks. I believe in Margorie Taylor Greene's district one of the contenders against her was harassed and threatened to the point of dropping out of the race.
The Left needs brave people that are ready to lay their lives on the line for what we believe, the stakes are as high as they've ever been, and so is the danger, and it's not like we can count on the authorities to do their jobs to protect us, because they've clearly shown that they are either incapable or unwilling, especially the fact that the thin blue line flag now flies in every law enforcement building, and if anything that flag is synonymous with fascism, MAGA, and police protectionism from consequences.
Joe Biden is not wrong when he says that this election is "a battle for the soul of the nation" because quite obviously it is, and if Trump is elected there will he no progress made politically against this type of stuff anytime soon.

Jon Stewart is such a pro. He’s at the top of his game, even still. He’s just so far above other political commentators it’s beautiful to watch.

I’d almost argue that the Colbert Report is more relevant now because it was a satire of Fox News and right wing news has gotten even more crazy than it was 10+ years ago.

My hot take is that he’s also much better when given constrained time. The Problem was interesting, but his comedy and commentary is forced to be much more clear and concise on the Daily Show. And when something bombs, the Daily Show doesn’t leave time to wade through a segment that isn’t working.
Not a bad take. I agree he's funnier in the constrained time, but I also liked the The Problem where he had more time for thoughtful discussions, interviews and debates. A lot less funny though.

I immediately recognized it as the same thing my dad did for awhile after he got his. Dentures lower the roof of your mouth a bit, so you have to get used to it and your mouth still tries to fall back on muscle memory for awhile, so you get weird sounding S's.

I've seen some complaints about him not going hard enough on Trump and trying to do a false equivalency with Biden being old. I don't see that. My impression was he was trying to appear impartial at first so when he does go hard on Trump later people won't question his motives. It's a marathon not a sprint.
Also by him saying they are both old he takes that issue off the table when comparing the two. So now it's not "one has dementia, the other is a fascist". It becomes "one is not a fascist, and the other is a fascist".
I don't know why Jon went back other than money. Daily Show has been on life support since he left and he's only doing the Monday shows until they can find a permanent host. This isn't going to last. Whoever they find is going to be just as lackluster as Kilborn at the best or as awkward as Noah at worst.

That's what the opening here was about with the topics he feels free to discuss on TDS. He doesn't want to be boxed in, and TDS gives him the platform to say what he wants to say, and just doing Mondays is a fair way to get involved again as a creative voice on the show, and let everyone else associated with it get reinvigorated about it as well after months of it being in limbo. I expect the ratings to climb again now that he's back. The content of this one show speaks for itself. He's great here.

I mean clearly not. The dude took years off after the Daily Show, made this Apple show, it gets shitcanned because Apple is Apple and Jon is now upset he doesn't have a platform anymore. That's not looking for a break. That's looking for a platform. You're talking about now, but your original question was asking why he left in the first place, which I answered for. He took a break, the Apple situation sucked, so now he wants to be involved in the space and this is how. Nothing wrong with that. Listen to his closing, and it seems he's even addressing that fact.

What's funny or sad is that I saw an interview where they were talking about his influence and Jon was saying that he had little influence because most of the things he didn't want to happen have happened over his career.

You're saying people didn't like him because he was black, and spoke of his international experiences. I don't think so. I watched a lot of his episodes, and the writing just wasn't there. Additionally, his interviewing skills are subpar. Often interrupting or talking over his guest, right when they're about to say something interesting.
You have a host that people grew accustomed to. Over 16 years. So many people who started watching the show in their teens spent half their lifes with Stewart. And you have a new host who yet has to find his groove. Of course viewership goes down for a while. But that is not an adequate reflection of the overall quality of that host.
Imagine you start a new work and even after 5 years and a promotion to senior, people say "well in his first months he wasn't like the old colleague we had for 15 years before that. That is not a probable metric.
Regarding the international experiences i am referring to his stand up programs. Of course something like "son of Particia" where he talks about his South African mom doesn't resonate as much with John Miller from Nebraska, like it does with people who lived across continents.
Son of Patricia was OK. But it mostly relied on him doing impressions of people he grew up with. It was funny, but in a middling sort of way. It's lazy joke writing that's comparable to Larry the Cable Guy or Jeff Dunham.
Just because he's black, doesn't mean that disliking his performance is racist. In fact, it's racist to suggest it. He's just not as good as Colbert or Stewart. Not like I hate him, he's fine. Just not as good at the Daily Show job.
One of the many things that turned me off Trevors performance, was that he always sat down before his guests did. Watch John, he'll always let them sit first, as a sign of respect. Trevor always sat down first.

Colbert does the same thing. Refuses to sit before his guest. I just like those small touches of respect too. Trevor felt like he had none for anyone.

He never has been. I legitimately have no idea why he has gotten any job ever. He's bad at writing comedy, he's bad at performing comedy, and he's bad at comedy banter with other comedians.

Tevor Noah was really good, but he's not on Stewart's level, and unfortunately it seemed like all of the pressure and attacks on Noah really started eating at him, I hope Noah finds his groove again and continues to do good, but I'm glad Jon is back, we needed his gravitas for what we're facing politically this year.
