Russia has had significantly more women than men for decades. The country’s 2020 census found that women and girls made up about 54 percent of Russia’s population, while men made up about 46 percent. Since February 2022, this gender gap has almost certainly become even more pronounced, as more than 120,000 Russian men have been killed in the war against Ukraine. A court in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod on August 12 handed a suspended four-year prison term to activist Gleb Kalinychev for sending 1,899 rubles ($21.50) to late opposition leader Aleksei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) in 2021-22.

A court in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of Russia's Kamchatka region in the Far East, on August 12 sentenced a local man to 10 years in prison for beating to death another man who had criticized Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The acting governor of Russia's Far Eastern region of Khabarovsk, Dmitry Demeshin, said on August 9 that a military parade will be held next month in the region's capital, also called Khabarovsk, to mark the victory over Japan in 1945.
