Synthesis Methods Explained: What is FM Synthesis? - Perfect Circuit

https://www.perfectcircuit.com/signal/what-is-fm-synthesis

What is FM Synthesis? Frequency modulation synthesis has origins in early analog synthesizers, but solidified with John Chowning's digital synth research and the Yamaha DX Series. Learn how FM works, and where it came from.

Anyone who got NI Maschine mk3 working under Linux?

Hey i am considering switchibg to Linux. I learned that it might be possible to use all my vsts theough yabridge. My main Problem is that maschine mk3 is not officially supported. Is there a solution for this?

Pioneer XDJ-RR to M-Audio Air 192 6 on Linux CIPPING - tchncs

https://discuss.tchncs.de/post/832497

I’ve got an unusual problem. Previously I would have asked Reddit, but screw them. Please let me know if this isn’t an appropriate usage of Lemmy or this… Sub-Lemmy? Anyway I’ve got an XDJ-RR that originally had been connected directly to our Sony receiver via RCA jacks on both devices. Audio was really good and it might clip if the levels were pushed to the extreme on the decks, but was controllable. Now we’ve connected the decks to an M-Audio Air 192 6 and run the audio through the computer using the XLR jacks on both devices. Now every sound from the decks wants to clip and the audio interface level meters are showing clipping. I’ve got the input turned all the way down to 1 on the M-Audio interface and we have to keep the master on the decks well more than halfway to negative infinity. The master level meters on the decks barely register. Some things I’m considering: 1. The RCA outputs on the decks run through a compressor for the basic bitches while the XLR outs are raw and I’m expected to know how to deal with it. 2. My XLR cables are too low resistance. I bought these years ago for microphone recording. They’re Mogami neglex 2549 microphone cables. 3. Either the XDJ-RR or M-Audio Air 192 6 are defective. 4. There’s a setting on the computer I could find to turn down the input gains aside from the the knobs provided on the M-Audio Air. 5. ??? Some more Notes: I’m using QJackCtl with Carla on the computer. Mostly we just patch the inputs to the outputs of the audio interface to play, but will also patch into OBS Studio for twitch streaming or Ardour for recording. Even though we keep the input gains pegged at the bottom, the main output knob is kept maxed out. Turning it down didn’t help with the clipping but brought the ouptut levels down unnecessarily.

I just want drag-n-drop drum riffs, how can I do this?

I've been struggling to get Superior Drummer working with Ardour through yabridge. (It seems to work but I get no window to view SD in so I'm not sure?) However, even if I launch SD through Bottles, I have no drum sounds installed since I had trouble getting the Sound Libraries installed.

That is besides the point, though, as I don't necessarily need Superior Drummer specifically... My goal is to be able to pick from a list of drum riffs, set a tempo, and drop them into Ardour some how to then record guitar over. Bonus if there are any good metal drum tracks to use, and bigger bonus if there are options outside of 4/4.

I really know nothing in this space and can only use Ardour enough to record my guitar input. Is there any software out there that can make this simple for me?

(I prefer free software but am willing to torrent and try any Windows stuff if need be).

Anyone using hardware synths with linux DAW?

Anyone using hardware synths with linux DAW?

I've dabbled a bit with using Ardour and FOSS synthesizer plugins lately. I'm no expert, have only ever been in the dabble stage (played around with FL studio 6 when I was a kid). But I have gotten the urge to try to use a hardware synthesizer after watching a youtube video of using an old DAW on an Atari to control a budget 80s synth. (Video for those interrested).

I like the idea of being limited to a certain set of hardware, as it can get the creative juices flowing, when I have a limited set of knobs to turn for example, to get the most out of it. So I've impulse-ordered a second hand Roland SH-32 desktop synth (still waiting for it to arrive), that I should in theory be able to have 4 instruments at the same time from what I've understood.

Does anyone here have experience setting up hardware synths with a DAW on linux? I have an audio interface with MIDI in and out, so I should be able to connect it to a DAW in theory. Wondering if it is possible for the DAW to set up the correct settings on the synth through MIDI, when I open the project in the DAW.

I know I'm a bit early to ask since I haven't even gotten the hardware yet 😅. But I'm exited to try something new 🙂
