@HelixDab2
@lemm.eeThis is one of those things that, compared against the number of students in schools in the US, is so vanishingly rare that it's not even worth worrying about on an individual basis. The 230 school shootings in a decade--23 per year--is divided among roughly 129,000 schools. The odds that any given school will experience a shooting in a given year is about .017%. Spending huge amounts of money on it, rather than things that actually make a real difference (like, say, qualified psychologist working as school counselors) is asinine.
Do I have body armor? Yup. Do I use it all the time? Nope. The only reason I have it is for division rules; I do armored competition division for PCSL, along with other gun run and brutality type events, so I gotta have it to make division rules. There's no way in hell I'd wear the shit on the daily unless I was in an active war zone.
First: There is no current NIJ specification for III+. It's either IIIa, III, or IV. III+ is a marketing gimmick for plate that stop all level III threats, but don't stop all level IV threats.
Second: I guess that depends on what you count as 'prohibitively heavy'. UHMW plates that are listed as III+ by the manufacturer (again, there is not NIJ specification for this) can be in the 5# range per plate for a small. My backpack in middle school was easily 25# since I never used my locker, so ???.
The "gun problem" is really an issue with shit like social services and safety nets, not guns per se.
If you talk to a criminal defense attorney and ask what the gov't could do that would see the biggest drop in gun crime, most of them will answer without hesitation: end the war on drugs. If you decriminalize and legalize drugs, you end fights over money and territory in a single fell swoop, because you don't see convenience stores shooting each other up, do you?
...Then pit both of them against someone that goes to a monthly IDPA or USPSA match.
(My point is, if you want to be able to use a gun when you're under a lot of pressure to perform well, you gotta practice under pressure too.)
And this is covered by freedom of the press.
Their freedom of the press isn't what's in question. Their ownership is. They are welcome to continue operating as long as they are not owned by a Chinese company based in China and subject to Chinese national security laws.
But, even if it's really, truly, a 1A issue, no rights are absolute. You can not, for instance, publish classified information, and then claim that it's a free speech issue. National security interests can, and do, outweigh individual and especially corporate rights to free speech.
especially when the justification seems to be about the speech on that app
But that's not the justification. The justification is first, access to data, and second, manipulation of that data. The gov't is arguing that TT is hoovering up massive amounts of data on users, and then is manipulating the content that is shown to them in order to unjustly influence international policy, and all done with no transparency at all. It's on-par with Russian election interference, although perhaps a little longer lasting and more subtly done.
People that are registered Republicans, consistently vote Republican, or hold Republican views make up a little under half of the overall population, current population in the US is around 340M (last time I checked, it's been a minute), so 140M is a fairly conservative (ha!) guess at how many people would more-or-less be Republican, or lean Republican.
Oh, and the flip side of that is that there are a larger number of people that are registered as Democratic voters, consistently vote Democratic, or tend to lean Democratic in their views, even if they don't vote/don't vote consistently.
I'm in the US, and I can't. I fucked my shoulder (probably a labral tear; still waiting on the MRI results), and it was two weeks to get in to see someone. If I'm actively dying from something, I would need to go to an ER or an urgent care center of some kind.
...It's not even close to the majority of people in the GOP. It's not even a particularly large minority
Jesus fucking christ.
Even if it was 100 people every single day that were being, caught, arrested, or convicted for CSAM or sexual misconduct of some kind with a minor, and every single one of them was in the GOP, that's still 365,000 out of about 140,000,000, which is .2%, on an annual basis. Two tenths of one percent is about fifty percent away from being a majority.
