Norris on hards defending against Hamilton on softs was some serious driving. Hell of a day for Lando.
Thought for sure McLaren made the wrong call there and Hamilton would fly by. But very impressed by Lando there. He earned that 2nd place. Hopefully they can keep this up.
I still maintain it was the wrong call. It only worked because Lando drove perfectly. If Lando made even the slightest mistake, he would have lost that position.
Expecting your driver to be prefect is not the right call.
Stella said on C4 that they intended to go for the hards because of the vsc, but the full safety changed things, however they didn't have time to then get the soft tyres ready in the pits. Basically there was a higher chance of losing positions by the time lost switching to softs in the pit lane.
I thought it was fairly obvious that the vsc would turn full based on where the car stopped so that was still a small error on their part, but yeah, there's always lots of things to take into account and it's not always a simple x or y decision.
Great race from McLaren, surprising the pace they suddenly have here!
I feel for Piastri, would have loved for him to get his first podium here.
Not only was he robbed P3 by a Ferrari engine, wtf is this DotD?!
Lando Norris - 45.5% Lewis Hamilton - 12.1% Oscar Piastri - 10.8% Sergio Perez - 8.1% Max Verstappen - 5.1%
10.8%?! That should've been in the 20s at least!
How tf did Lewis get the second most votes for lucking his way onto the podium with a well-timed SC?
Agreed. I would chalk it up to the British home crowd voting heavily in favor of their guys.
Yeah, a bit of bad luck with the safety car. Great drive to keep Russell behind. He's such a promising young talent.
I'm happy for Lando and McLaren, but wtf was that Ferrari strategy? They were even more clownish than usual
Part of me thinks that plan b was really bad and Carlos was daring them to say it on radio to make them think twice about it.
Merc, Aston, Ferrari and McLaren all fighting over 2 podium spots is cool! Perez is just chilling for a year.
It's crazy how Perez has fallen this year. Towards the beginning, I thought he might be able to fight with Verstappen for the Championship. Now I'm not sure if he will still have a seat at Red Bull next year.
I canโt see any way Perez has a seat at RB next season. Iโm not 100% sure heโll have one by the end of this season.
I said the same exact thing after the race. The rest of the field is so much more interesting. Without red bull this would be one of the best seasons.
Ha! I can take that risk as it feels great to see this post have over 250 votes in six hours. Lemmy is getting more traction.
Same. I was being careful to slowly scroll so I could see if a post was from c/formula1 (my app shows the community at the top), but then something loaded and my feed jumped, putting this post right in the center of my screen. Oh well.
I've never understood the value of a thread that spoils the race results. I wish we could just post a race results discussion thread without putting the results in the title or image.
I had blocked the sub on Reddit from my homepage after being spoiled a couple of times. Hope we get that feature in the Lemmy apps someday.
Wefwef/Voyager can block communities. Don't know how it works, since I haven't used it, but the button is there.
On Wefwef, it completely blocks the community and not just filter it from homepage. It just needs to be tweaked and get a filter for homepage, but itโs good that the option is there. I might just send a feedback on this feature.
Brilliant driving from Lando, was really worried for mclaren when they put him on hards at the end but it worked out
Yes, he really had to wring out that podium step with some tough, but fair, defending while Hamilton killed his tyres. It's good that he trusted the team and then bloody well made the strategy work. Great combination. Hamilton was lucky to be up there, anyway.
Great race overall, probably equally as good as the Austria Sprint.
McLaren was the headliner and Norris rightly got all the plaudits for an amazing drive, but it's a shame more fuss hasn't been raised about Piastri. He would most likely have had a podium if not for the unlucky safety car and continues to show that the hype was not unwarranted. It's going to be very interesting to see what he can do in a car that can actually perform.
Aston continues to struggle, though this track was never going to be suited for them, and Stroll delivered a patented yo-yo performance by following up a solid showing in Austria by being very poor today. Alonso did what he could and displayed some great defensive positioning, but 7th was probably the best they could hope for here. Hungary should be a good track for Aston and so that's when we'll get a true measure of how far behind the pack they've fallen.
Shambolic race weekend by Ferrari, though their car seemed just awful here. Wasn't fast enough on the medium and couldn't get temps into the hards.
Not much to say about Red Bull, I feel like we've seen this race multiple times already this season from them. It was nice seeing Max at least briefly involved in battles, but otherwise it was another comfortable victory for him while Perez fucked his quali and executed an unremarkable bare-minimum recovery drive.
Shout-out to two drivers who will be forgotten this race. Gasly was doing really well until his car did an Alpine got Strolled, so it's unfortunate he probably won't get any credit, and finally a solid race by Sargent, but he didn't get any points so I imagine nobody will have noticed.
EDIT: thanks eroc1990 for pointing out the contact with Stroll was harder than I caught live and so Stroll was probably more to blame than Alpine.
Was the contact that bad? I know they touched but it didn't look forceful enough to break Gaslys suspension. I'll look at it again.
It looked like it to me. The clip starts here on the race highlights. Once Stroll returns to within track limits, it looks like direct wheel to wheel with harder contact on the rear right, which seems to have been what caused the suspension to break. at ~6:43 they show the onboard from Gasly's view and it was hard enough to jolt him, and only after Stroll made contact did the Alpine begin to crab.
EDIT: Fixing grammar/caps.
What a performance by McLaren! So impressed with Lando's driving in that last stint. Shame for Oscar, but P4 in his first F1 British GP as a rookie is nothing to be ashamed of.
I think if they didn't coward out on the hards than Piastri could have gotten his first podium. I'm honestly kinda angry at the McLaren pitwall.
They 100% should not have been on the hards, but in the end the softs did wind up falling away from those that used them, so it wasn't completely boneheaded.
I think you're right but it just hurt to see Oscar around a second behind Lewis coming around the last corner. The Papayas we're looking so good I cant imagine Oscar couldn't have made that up in the last sprint. So happy for them regardless, however.
The timing of the stop is just as bad as the choice of compound, but you can't really pre-plan for a VSC or an SC. Still, though, Oscar was super, super close in the final sector of the last lap. I'm sure Ham wasn't pushing super hard because he just wanted to bring it home, but one or two more laps and I think Oscar could have sniped that last podium spot.
We went through this back in the day on r/Formula1, banning spoilers restricts the conversation.
I get that sometimes you're not able to watch live, restrict the Formula1 content you consume during that time.
You can't have the entire F1 community tiptoe around you because you've not watched the race.
Having said that, other race series should be spoiler-free in this community.
How does making headline being โBritish Grand Prix results discussionโ restrict the conversation?
This stuff is being federated across multiple instances in the โAllโ feed
I agree, or in the thumbnail!! So frustrating when you're waiting for the highlights show on TV and scrolling only to have it spoiled for you!! ๐
The admin of the sub claimed earlier today a mod team is being put together so I hope we'll have clearer rules and better enforcement soon. This sub is much more lively right now but !formula1@lemmy.ml is better moderated. Bit of a shame.
Really enjoyed that one. Great to see McLaren show pace like that again, makes you wonder what might have been possible if they were able to deliver this car at the start of the season. Really happy that Lando has been given a car worthy of his talent, hopefully it works well at other high-speed circuits. Also Max talking about praying Oscar didn't understeer into him as they went side by side through Copse was hilarious.
We'll have to see.
Hungary is a totally different track, so if they're also quick there then we may be in for some fun!
The fight with Hamilton showed that their car is doing great on top speed and high speed corners, but not low speed corners. I wonโt be surprised if slower circuits will see them dropping back around front of midfield.
So happy for McLaren and Albon. Mercs weren't too bad either tbh. Ferrari nothing to say about them, won't be long until they wouldn't finish in the top 10 lol.
Great win, very nice to see Lando doing well and got some enjoyment out of the British public having to listen to the Dutch anthem (you could feel the pain sweep over the crowd ๐)
This is my least favorite track on the calendar though so all-in-all a meh weekend F1 wise
Sad to see c/formula1 spoiling the race result plainly in the title just like r/formula1. Some things never change...
I donโt think the problem is the titleโฆ itโs expecting the whole world to wait while you catch up. Just donโt visit forums till youโve watched the raceโฆ
This isn't formulaoneforum.com. Lemmy, just like reddit before it, is a service that allows me to follow a massive variety of topics in the same place. This post could we'll have been the first post that loaded when I opened the the page, openly spoiling the result before I have a chance to look away or hide it.
You think it's reasonable that a person should need to avoid using this service entirely until they find time to watch a race just so you can have a post with the winners name clearly written?
What is gained for anyone by naming the post in such a manner?
I hear you but I also think if spoilers upset one so much one should avoid any risk of exposure. Lemmy is just one service on the World Wide Web. Risking being on the latter and not expecting spoilers from somewhere, not just Lemmy seems like a fools errand to me.
As for what is gained, if I see the current title I immediately know which thread to go into to discuss the race which Iโm sure may be the case for many others as well so it helps keep the discourse together. A non descriptive title would definitely miss my eye. It could just be my adhd riddled brain which has led me to be militant about avoiding the Internet till Iโve watched the race but this is just my viewpoint.
Every time I see Max win I always think it's saying. Thax for stoppin, and letting me take first.
