Mostly due to repost bots.
Remove em and it becomes better.
Also 4chan shouldn't act like it's all original either. Nowadays they to a large degree copy from Twitter and Reddit.
The meme is also outdated and it shows. Tumblr became its own ecosystem in the last few years thanks to Elons dumb antics on Twitter.
9gag also directly steals from reddit. They run scraping bots specifically to steal popular reddit posts.
I have seen mention of removing bots. Is there a way to do it for all repost bots? Our only blocking one at a time? Thanks!
I saw my first shill bot on lemmy today (1 day old account posting a gif of a product and then responding to "cool where can I get one" with a purchase link). They deleted the post when I called them out
I can't even think of a meme that 4chan hasn't come up with in the past decade (new racial slurs don't count)
Back in 2009 they were the bleeding edge for shitposts though
Edit: am illiterate
All the memes that are hot with Gen Z start on tiktok. They're usually video based so couldn't be on 4chan to begin with
I got into it for a while about ten years ago and at the time a lot of their content was spilling over to other sites and they were equal parts brilliant, stupid, witty, retarded, open and bigoted. They were a source of a lot of internet chatter that got people talking.
Now I go on once in a while to check in on them .... and it feels like they're stuck in the same rut and it's the same group of weirdos trying to restart things that had already been done years ago. They're not new anymore and they just sound like a broken recording playing the same thing over and over again. It was funny the first few times .... now it's just sad and stupid.
My thoughts on 4chan as a breeding ground of a pile of internet culture, the pretty well unrestrained anarchy that defines the place mixed with the ability to post whatever insanity drips out of your head makes for a perfect shit storm.
It's a lot like bacteria in a petri dish, generations of meme evolutions happen in a matter of days until something shows up that's so virulent it infects the rest of the web.
Depends on what instance/community. For example,
lemmygrad and Hexbear are a closed loop. They just trade shit back and forth.
I've never seen an original meme format there. It's just political opinions in recycled formats
There's oc on most of the platforms listed, but it's all such an incestuous clusterfuck that the order can never truly be determined.
Yeah, but how else am I gonna make a funny meme that makes people go "OMG so true"
This was maybe true 7 years ago or so. But I can't name a single meme that has come out of 4chan since Soyjaks went out of fashion (and I honestly think Soyjaks directly killed 4chan's relevance to wider internet culture.)
No one is in a line feeding one to the other ..... everyone is just in one giant hog pen where we keep picking up shit and flinging it at each other
I think it's more like a cess pool and everyone is wallowing around it all thinking their part of the pool is better than anyone else.
This is wrong because 4chan fucking loves eating shit. We'd rush back down to the bottom and shove the table kid out of the way
Guy in the corner meme : They don't know I don't even have a steady stream of memes.
I'll be the one to say it: it's way down the bottom of the chart. I see so many memes from like 1994 that it's almost more like the completion of a shit circle than a straight shit line.
If you're seeing them here, there was quite a bit here where posting old memes was a thing. It wasn't just then making it to the fediverse, but nostalgia posting.
Well i posted my meme here only, then someone on twitter posted it there, so I would say on top, but with a different chain
