Really? There's what.. dozens of thousands of accounts on the main server alone? That's centralization. Decentralization is when there's no servers and you own your data. For example, Manyverse using SSB (Secure Scuttlebutt) protocol, is trully decentralized, has a thing called Pubs but it's optional. Also works offline, via WiFi, etc.
Tbh nothing guarantees that the same doesn't happen in Lemmy. As long as you have some form of centralization that might always happen, even if the owner says it won't. There's truly decentralized options and everyone should be jumping to that, not another version of the same issue like Lemmy or Mastodon.
Any tech has its ups and downs. My first comment said in other words, the user and it's followers would host the content. Also having a cell plan is already a problem for many people but with SSB you can update your feed while online, see and comment offline, then upload those comments and your new posts when you finally go online again. Can you do that with Lemmy, Reddit... nope.
Would be really cool if Lemmy would be truly decentralized. I mean each user and it's followers hosted the user content. And don't come with the it's not possible or let me tell you why wouldn't work because that's exactly what happens in Scuttlebutt protocol. When will people learn. Centralization, small or big is aways a problem. We all have all it takes to make it happen, smartphones, laptops, desktops, servers.. everyone's at least one of these. So why still this mess with social platforms?!
