@Swarming
@sh.itjust.worksI think it's fine for communities which are created for specific political, social movements etc to do so. But when you get broader communities like this one, it's much more difficult and thorny to figure out. If you set up a socialist server, crack on with defederating from right-wing ones. If your server is about environmental activism, swing the banhammer on anyone who questions it. I legit have no problem with that.
I suspect there's very little disagreement about keeping The Donald types defederated and related /c/s banned. But that's only the easy edge of it.
Servers like this one need to be really careful we don't get whittled away by various niche groups demanding bans and defederations.
If a server allows conservative users, or people who think that sex-based rights are important, or that anti-Zionism is racism, etc etc etc. Do we ban them? Where do we draw that line?
Why don't we just keep it to Trump/MAGA servers, trolls and bot-farms, and communities which directly interfere with and undermine ours, or at least something in that ballpark
I agree. I don't want a small number of highly motivated individuals with grudges, vendettas, and ideological priors having that much power. Ban TheDonald type stuff, bots, etc. but otherwise be very careful
I'm on a Nothing Phone 1 which I can't recommend highly enough especially given the price, though I'll probably be updating day-one to the Nothing Phone 2 when that's released early next month. The NP1 is more mid-range though.
Ban, defederate, whatever, I don't mind the method – I do not want this server to have these "people" on our server and able to interact with/see us.
Definitely. About two years ago, I read Michel Houellebecq's Soumission. And it's still just sort of constantly in my head. I don't read it as a kind of reactionary book at all – in fact it's a strangely utopian book, pessimistic about the possibility of secular politics to rectify deep metaphysical questions in our societies, but strangely curious and probing about whether Islam could in fact at least answer them. The ambiguity at the heart of that novel still puzzles and interests me.
I should read it again...
Thank you! Very happy The Dude liked them that much. I only registered earlier today, but love the software, interface, community and overall feel of this!
Yay! Can I DM you the high Res version of the one you prefer? I assume you've just cropped from the grid, I can give you a full Res one.
Also, for community banners, do any of these catch your eye? Just, idk, so there is one I suppose! Let me know and I'll up-res the one you pick and send it over.
Hahahaha, I can understand the cynicism.
I've put in 125 hours to Tears of the Kingdom though so maybe that's restored some of my faith in what video games can be!
I've been going back and reading Freud's Civilisation and its Discontents again. I still think it has some pretty profound wisdom about the nature of desire, conflict, violence, and what it takes to make civilisation possible!
I maybe got like 10-15 hours into it? I quite liked it but it felt underbaked in many areas. I'm curious to see just how expansive the improvements to basic core gameplay systems are in the final product here. Because graphically and narratively, I felt they had something pretty special.
