funnily enough, it doesn't even take military intervention. the US crushed any reformist movement that existed in Iran when it backed out of the JCPOA. after years of negotiations, with Iran fully complying with every point of the deal, Trump came in and backed out of the deal, reimposed sanctions, and a few years later assassinated Soleimani.
reformers had pushed hard for the deal and they were made to look like complete morons while the hardliners were emboldened. the message Iran got from it is pretty clear - the US cannot be dealt with, no reform in that area is possible.
I'm hopeful the economic situation will improve a lot in the coming years - with the US's power waning, the sanctions become less and less meaningful. Russia has been significantly increasing trade with Iran, and I hope China does the same. I just hope the IR realizes it doesn't have much domestic support and engages in some major social reforms.
