@Salvo
@aussie.zoneYes, It is definitely a case of taking US$44 billion and throwing it away. But it is worse than that, because Twitter was a resource for the internet community.
And his attempts to make money after the fact are as pathetic as a World Leader using his position to spruik tins of beans.
It is almost like some sort of performance art.
Ain’t gonna happen. This is the only reason they are releasing Threads. It is also the only reason Elon and u/spez have killed third party apps.
It is also why you can’t use Threads in a browser. (You can read other threads, but can’t post or use any of the other features.
The cream on top of this cherry is that Meta claim that they don’t have any ex-twitter employees.
“Andy Stone, Meta’s communications director, told Semafor that Twitter’s accusations are baseless. “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that’s just not a thing,” he said.”
Mastodon (and other FOSS ActivityPub platforms) aren’t just great because they are open source, they are great because they are distributed.
The Internet was designed to be resilient, famously designed to withstand (a nuclear) attack. The World Wide Web started to make it monolithic and Web 2.0 resulted in a more centrally controlled infrastructure.
When an attack comes from above (like Musk, /u/spez, Meta and Google) one (group of) individual(s) can take our whole swathes of content in one policy change.
The instance that someone is hosted on is (almost) completely irrelevant to which communities they can join.
I am in a local region instance but can still access any communities on Lemmy.world, Lemmy.ml and even other federated platforms like kbin.social
I may be restricted on what I can do in each of those instances; it there is some disagreement between Aussie.zone and sh.itjust.works I may not be able to post about camping to my preferred community.
I’m not going to install or create an account in threads, howver, I will be quite non-discriminatory to thread users when they become federated.
I personally hope that Instagram users start to use Threads instead.
Adam Mosseri claims that they are not going to try to prevent Thread users from churning to other instances.

Whether they follow through with their commitments is yet to be determined.
Which have all sorts of names for their bubbies. Kits, kittens, cubs, pups, lambs, foals, kids, piglets… etc, etc.
I would love to use it as a conduit to drag those I love out of the Facebook/Instagram microcosms.
Adam Mosseri appears to be embracing the idea of Open Federation for Threads; https://www.threads.net/t/CuRtcYTNY3J
“ If you’re wondering why this matters, here’s a reason: you may one day end up leaving Threads, or, hopefully not, end up de-platformed. If that ever happens, you should be able to take your audience with you to another server. Being open can enable that.”
I can leave the larger community, but I do miss a couple subreddits.
The good thing about the Reddit before the dark times of 3 weeks ago, was that it had a large enough user graph that there were enough people with niche interests to have an active community. Facebook also has this critical user graph.
The good thing about ActivityPub based communities is that there is the potential to have much larger federated user graphs than the individual closed business-based platforms.
