Nationalism begets nationalism begets fascism. People underestimate how much certain countries have been putting their fingers on the scale.
Um, hard disagree. It makes a lot of sense if we don’t want to entirely be dependent on China for silicon production. Gets a little fuzzy because this is a foreign company, but the plant is still on US soil. We need to make semi-conductors in the US or we can never maintain independence from China. Our dependency on China still may be too far gone, but this is at least an attempt to remain independent from arguably our largest world adversary. Remember how the world’s hardware supply chain slowed to a molasses pace because of COVID? That’s why it’s smart to build in the US.
This is a good point. It’s more likely that they changed their underlying storage infrastructure/access and don’t want to deal with data migrations. Data migrations are very expensive and non-value add.
So, yeah, probably some messed up data processing still going on behind the scenes and now you CAN’T delete them because you cannot access them. I could even see that last bit being the entire point. They’ve removed easy access to delete any messages along with any reminder of what exists that Reddit has. Oh god damn it it’s probably both of these things. Much easier to run data processing on something people don’t try to access often.
And don’t use gmail, google calendar, sheets, docs, etc. In the context of Google, it doesn’t have to be publicly available online for Google to use it. Someone could keep their journal in sheets with no intent of it being public and Google is using the info.
Regarding #5. Twitter was a bit of a disaster regarding asset recovery before a bunch of people got fired. They often failed to make sure assets were sent back in a timely fashion. When musk fired everyone, I’m sure that problem got really bad and that Twitter failed to send instructions or materials for asset collection. People lost access to their corporate accounts and computers, but I’m guessing Twitter didn’t bother to collect all the assets so some ex employees probably still do have laptops or monitors because they literally don’t know what to do with them. I have no idea how big of a problem that might be.
