To add to the point of cheaper versions. Best buy does this and those items will have a different SKU. They also don't bother to take the regular version off their website, so you can check it against that. From what I remember when my ex worked there, it was a combination of removing features/ports, and lower quality control.
This article is misleading. If a car crash is bad enough that it damages the frame of a car, it's going to get totalled anyway. So either way it's going to go to a junk yard and get slowly parted out.

My thoughts are similar to yours, I don’t think instances should be defederating unless there’s a serious issue with the content of another instance.
Good instances should be winning over people by being better than whatever Facebook’s ad ridden, algorithm driven, instance ends up being.
